Taus Makhacheva was born in Moscow in 1983.
She studied in London and Moscow.
Her works are exhibited at Tate Modern in London, MuHKA in Antwerp, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Kadist Art Foundation in Paris and San Francisco, and the Videosight Foundation in Turin.
The focal point of her work is the history and imagery of her native territory. Taus Makhachevaemploys a wide range of mediums to present her work, including video, installations, and photographs through which the artist reflects on the boundary between opposites and how her country’s past can reinvent itself in everyday life, evolving into a process of searching for a new identity.
Taus Makhacheva participated in the Venice Biennale in 2017, the Shanghai Biennale in 2016, and the Moscow Biennale in 2015.
On the occasion of the Manifesta 12 biennial contemporary art exhibition, the Pietro Barbaro Foundation hosted the video installation of the work “Baida” by Taus Makhacheva at its headquarters in Palazzo Trinacria in Palermo. The performance, originally developed for the Venice Biennale in 2017, narrates the precarious and inseparable relationship that binds the lives of the fishermen in the village of Starii Terek in Dagestan to the indisputable natural forces that dominate the sea.
The initiative engaged a diverse audience of tourists and local residents, including many families, generating interest and participation and encouraging the audience to visit the exhibition more than once.
